Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to interact with cells just beneath the surface of the skin. Unlike UV light, it does not damage skin. Instead, it is thought to support the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside cells.

How it works. Mitochondria contain a compound called cytochrome c oxidase, which absorbs red and near-infrared light particularly well. When it absorbs this light, cellular energy production (ATP) may increase, which researchers believe is behind many of the reported effects of this therapy.

What it may help with. Studies and clinical use have explored red light therapy for skin tone and collagen support, reduced inflammation, faster recovery after exercise, and support for joint discomfort. Research is ongoing, and results vary by wavelength, dose, and consistency of use.

What a session looks like. Sessions are non-invasive and typically last 10 to 20 minutes, with the skin exposed to a panel or device emitting red and near-infrared light. Most people find it relaxing, with no downtime afterward.

Is it right for you? Red light therapy is generally considered low-risk for most healthy adults, but anyone with a medical condition, or anyone who is pregnant, should check with a doctor before starting any new therapy. As with most longevity tools, consistency over time matters more than any single session.
